Scientific Prompt Iteration: Eliminate Contradictions and Test Variables
When an AI-generated image looks wrong, the instinctive reaction is often to add more words. But adding more adjectives to a broken prompt usually compounds the confusion. Professional prompt crafting relies on scientific iteration: identifying contradictory instructions, pruning redundant filler, and altering exactly one variable at a time.
Define the evaluation criteria
Before generating, list three things the image must communicate, such as a readable face, a quiet setting and warm side light. These criteria make it easier to judge whether more elaborate wording actually improved the result.
Change one dimension at a time
Keep the subject, model and dimensions fixed while comparing two lighting choices. Next compare framing. Where your platform supports a seed, holding it constant can help comparison, but does not guarantee the same composition across model changes.
Resolve opposing instructions
Look for shallow and deep focus together, opposing weather, or simultaneous full-body and face-only framing. Mixed materials are fine when assigned to different surfaces. Use one principal style and add only compatible secondary details.
Keep a compact working record
Save the prompt, supported settings and a short note about the result outside this tool. The generators do not store your inputs. Reuse successful structures, but adapt the subject and setting instead of repeatedly adding generic quality words.
4 Types of Prompt Contradictions
Optical Contradictions
"Wide establishing landscape shot" combined with "extreme macro close-up."
Resolution: Choose one camera distance per generation. You cannot capture both a panoramic horizon and microscopic flower stamen in a single lens framing.
Lighting Contradictions
"Harsh bright midday sunlight" combined with "glowing wet neon street reflections."
Resolution: Choose either nocturnal practical lighting or daylight sun. Opposing lighting sources force the diffusion tensor into muddy grey compromises.
Material Contradictions
"Ultra-glossy reflective mirror finish" combined with "matte chalky rough stone finish" on the same object.
Resolution: Assign specific materials to distinct components: "matte ceramic lid atop a polished clear glass jar."
Stylistic Contradictions
"Hyperrealistic documentary photograph" combined with "anime concept art and 3D octane render."
Resolution: Pick one medium. Mixing 2D anime with 3D gaming engines and documentary photography causes mangled anatomy and inconsistent rendering.
Prompt Troubleshooting Matrix
Skin looks like melted plastic or waxy doll makeup.
Root Cause: Used buzzwords like "flawless," "smooth," "perfect," or "hyperrealistic."
Background is a chaotic, noisy blur of random objects.
Root Cause: Lack of spatial environment definitions; AI filled empty space with hallucinations.
Colors are oversaturated and bleeding into neon sludge.
Root Cause: Requested too many vibrant colors or stacked "colorful, vibrant, 8k, vivid."
Subject is tiny, off-center, or completely missing.
Root Cause: Environment description was three times longer than the subject description.
Step-by-Step Prompt Refinement
Step 0: The Flawed Starting Prompt
Diagnosis: Vague subject, no defined lighting origin, no camera lens, loaded with useless buzzwords.
Step 1: Anchor the Subject & Action
Diagnosis: Subject now has a specific identity, authentic wardrobe, and active narrative posture.
Step 2: Add Camera Framing & Optics
Diagnosis: Established camera height and 35mm focal perspective with clear depth of field.
Step 3: Define Motivated Light & Color Grading
Diagnosis: Complete, professional cinematic brief with zero buzzwords and cohesive visual physics.
